Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old in Long Beach, California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. The aunt was on in the evening shift as nurse, so she could pursue her love of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread social activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. As studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Pollyanna McIntosh grew up in Portugal and Colombia before returning to her native Scotland which is where she first started performing on stage in The Edinburgh Festival. She relocated to London at the age of 16 and soon started to become involved in indie filmmaking. Her first job that was paid was working as a stoner in Irvine Welsh's The Acid House (1998).
